For everyone commuting on GO Transit for the rest of the term be prepared to pay a little bit more. GO Transit increased their fare rates on Saturday March 15th. They released a statement on February
20th, but it wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to find. GO says they haven’t increased their fares in two years. The fare increase is going towards paying for new train and bus services, as well as standard operating costs.
<o></o>
If you are wondering how much more money you will need to pay to use this service, the rates really aren’t that bad. A one-way adult ticket will cost fifteen cents ($0.15) more. An adult two-way ticket increases by thirty cents (0.30). An adult 10-ride pass is now $1.25 more. An adult monthly pass costs an additional $5.00.
<o></o>
If you have a GO Transit discount card, your discount will still be applied, but in conjunction with the increased fees. If you don’t know what the discount card is, go onto MUGSI, then your non-academic applications. From there you fill in a short form, and a week afterwards you can pick up your discount card from Compass. The discount applies to 10 ride and monthly pass tickets, and you will get between 10%-30% in discount. The card is good until the end of August. You will need to fill out a new card for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Regardless of the price hike, GO Transit is still an excellent option for those who commute. It drops you off right on campus, and is less expensive than filling up a car with gas. Using public transit decreases the amount of emissions into the environment as well.

If you want more information about the increase, you can read the News Statement from GO Transit, here

Rate increases are always a bummer... but if you compare the rate for a GO Bus 2 way ticket to go somewhere outside of Hamilton VS paying for a taxi, the price is unquestionably cheaper

Even though Paul Jones didn't win I hope bringing Go Transit to campus on Weekends remains a prority, I hate not being able to get to campus on Saturday's.

The MSU has had many years to actually do something on the file. When I asked the transportation minister about the issue when she was last on campus, she was surprised by the question. When I spoke to GO Transit officials, they stated they have recieved some emails about the issue from students but the students union was not interested about weekend service.

Actually, the MSU was more concerned about not having ticket machines on campus as it may hurt their profits on ticket sales.

In terms of it happening, It will not occur on the 407 in the next year due to difficulty recruiting new drivers for the current service. It is possible to get Lakeshore connections, but even that would be a challenge has it requires two buses on the road to link to the rail line.

I suppose it could be because Paul was the only one who made GO Transit a priority on his campaign? I'm not sure where Azim stands on GO Transit. Other than the HSR, he didn't mention much in his campaign. But I'll be sure to ask him about GO Transit once we setup a video interview Look out for it!
