Good Food Box - Last One Of The Year!

Good Food Box - Last One Of The Year!

BY HENRY NGAN, SERVICE COORDINATOR, MAC BREAD BIN

Half a year later, ít's our last Good Food Box delivery! I still remember how we started out with just 9 orders; last month, we served 45.

To order through the Bread Bin, go to the MSU office (MUSC 201) and talk to the office clerk at the front desk. The clerk would have for you a form to fill out and she will also take your money. Since it is the last box of the school year, we cannot accept IOU's. A confirmation will be sent out to you on Monday night to confirm your order and with details for pickup.

Boxes, contain approximately 20 pounds of fresh produce, most of them from Ontario. Staple Good Food Box items include apples, pears, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, carrots, lettuce, and the rest of the contents depends on availability and price. Valued at over $25 dollars in grocery stores, the box is offered to students at $12 after a $3 subsidy offered by Grace Lutheran Church, and then a further $3 subsidy (so $9/box) is offered to students who have used the Bread Bin's food bank services. This program is able to exist because of a driver and ex-grower by the name of Brad, who has made his personal mission to provide business for as many as his friends at the Ontario Food Terminal. He delivers vegetables in bulk out of his own truck to locations all across Ontario. Believe it or not, farmers are making more money selling to Brad than to large grocery chains (yet we, as consumers, pay less, go figure that one out).

Although this is the last Good Food Box that the Bread Bin is organizing to McMaster this year, you can still order through Grace Lutheran Church. They will continue the program for May and June, before taking a break for July and August and returning in September. To order through Grace Lutheran Church, please contact:

Rev. Loretta Jaunzarins
1107 Main Street West, Hamilton, ON
905-527-0866

It is recommended that if you live close to the church or a member of the McMaster University with a vehicle, please do order from Grace (you would pick up at the church as well) as it lessens the number of boxes that we have to handle at McMaster.

Is this a one time thing, or does the box come every week, or...?

You are signing up for April's box. You can sign up for subsequent boxes during the summer or next year if you choose although I'm not sure if you have to do so each month.
