How about the Farmer's Market in Jackson Square? Personally, I think the Market is one of the best (and cheapest) place to shop for fresh produce. I could get 12-14 apples for $3. Admittedly, the apples are no way shiny or flawless like the ones you get in Fortinos but they are all very fresh despite the slightly ugly skin. Needless to say, I visited the Farmer's Market at least once every week. There are over 10 stalls in the Market and you will be spoil for choices! =D

If you are searching for Asian products, I would really recommend S&S Supermarket (also known as D&T Supermarket) in Locke St. South, two stops after the stop in Fortinos Dundurn if going by bus. Over there, I could get cheap and fresh chicken other than Asian vegetables (bak choy, chinese cabbage, etc.).

As for the cheapest milk and eggs, Shoppers Drug Mart is a good place to purchase them. I get a 4litre milk pack for $3.97 ($3.33 with Optimum card) and a dozen eggs for usually $1.97. Milk and eggs are only available in certain Shoppers (in University Plaza and the one near Fortinos Dundurn), not the one in Westdale.

Hope that helps! =D

I went to the Fortinos on welcome day. Its really not far from the campus, 10-15min walk. Plus I saw a bustop right across it so I assume a direct bus goes there. The Fortinos is MASSIVE. No joke. And I found most of their stuff to be reasonably cheap.

The Barn got bought by Metro, so in essence, no more Barn.
Food Basics is also pretty cheap, but the closest ones to Mac are either on the mountain, or on Barton St. :/

If saving money is truly what you're after, you can use your bus pass and get a free ride there

@samantha:
Definitely agree with you about Metro being overpriced, but sometimes you can find deals on produce. Not always, but sometimes.

And is there anyone out there besides me who can vouch that Price Chopper doesn't seem to do that well in the Hamilton area? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember there used to be one on Barton St. behind the Ivor Wynne stadium but it may have closed down.

.......

It is actually true because to get there you need to change buses - take1A or such Downtown and then the Upper James bus to Upper James @ Mohawk.

There is another No Frills on Mohawk west but not any closer really - you need to take the 5C to Ancaster/Meadowlands and then the 41 to Mohawk West @ Rice Ave.

Just a note, supermarket fruit is polished with Wax to make it look "perfect". Taste is what's important.

WHAT?! That pisses me off. I'd be saving soo much money right now. Do you know how many students would be in there like three times a week because they can't believe the deals on food and we would all get more fat? Yeesh. Haha.

You think so? I think it's pretty standard sized for a grocery store. I think the most massive stores I've ever seen are the Walmart supercenters. I swear... some of those places are large enough to have their own weather systems :s.

I believe the closest Walmart is in Westgate Mall, so really far away, I could be wrong though.

Is there only 1 No Frills in Hamilton?

but like everyone else said, No Frills is the cheapest. We have TONS of them here in Toronto & the surrounding areas like Brampton, Mississauga, etc. No Frills pretty much overpowers every other grocery store. In Mississauga there are 11 No Frills, 11 !!! that'a crazy lol.

No I think there are two. The closest one being on Main St E and Tisdale (take the 1A). The other being close to Mohawk
