Health Sci Year 1 Electives
Hi everyone!
My name is Olivia and in September I will be starting in the Health Science program but I am kind of stressed about what to pick as my electives. I have 9 units of electives and am interested in (other that health science) math and physics (especially physics). What kind of electives to most health sci students in the first year? I want to take subjects I enjoy but I also don't what too heavy of a first year.
Thanks in advance! Sorry if this is kind of vague, but I could use some advice.
Liv

Take whatever you're interested in. Don't worry about it being too hard of a year, it would be worse if you took random courses that you don't care about and don't want to put effort into. Many upper-year courses have prerequisites as well, so you might want to keep that in mind when choosing electives. Other than that, go for whatever you're interested in

Hey Olivia! Congrats and welcome to the health sci family!!!
The beauty about health sci is the freedom you get for electives. I would say I know people who have taken ALL SORTS of electives (NOT JUST THE ELECTIVES THAT WERE LISTED)... all depending on YOUR interests. Don't feel you HAVE to take a class because other people are. There are so many electives that can meet your interests...and if you're worrying about prerequisites and all, you have plenty of room 2nd, 3rd and 4th year!

Of course you don't have to take any of the ones mentioned above, you can take anything that interests you. We're just giving you an overview of what types of electives we've seen others take. Definitely don't feel like you have to take any of the courses we mentioned.

Thanks everyone! I just had another question, if I only take Math 1LS3 or 1AO3 I can't take any upper year math classes right? The prerequisites require 1LT3 or 1 AA3.
And silly question:
nine units of electives means three 3 unit courses right?

If the prerequisites say you need math 1AA3 then you need math 1AA3. You can take a 6 unit course and a 3 unit course, which means you would have a total of 9 units. Or you could take three 3 unit courses and still have a total of 9 units. You don't need to take only 3 unit courses, you just need to make sure all your electives add up to a total of 9 units.

Most (if not all) upper year math courses also require math 1B03 (linear algebra).

Yup. As far as I know, 1B03, 1A03 (or 1X03, 1LS3) and 1AA3 (or 1XX3, 1LT3) are prerequisites for nearly all upper-year math courses

So I wanted to keep my options open with math, could I take 1LS3 or 1AO3 in first year and then take 1LST or 1AA3 in second year?
And I was reading about physc courses and is it true because I am in the Health Sci program I don't need year one prerequisites to take some year two physc courses?

If you want to take upper year math courses, then you should probably take 1A03/1AA3/1B03, but you can look at the course calendar here http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1881.html for specific course requirements.
Yes, it looks that way--I think it's because of your psychobiology course in first year. If there's a specific course you're interested in, check out the prerequisites here http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1837.html
