Labs aren't classes, they're labs; meaning you go in, you do your experiment, hand in what you've done, and get marks for it (for physics and chem anyway). It's effectively 3 hours every other week you're being assessed on what you're supposed to have already learned in lecture. It could be bad as in you sleep in; for me, I knew I couldn't really miss labs so I got up for them all, but I was pretty tired. And doing work you're being marked on when you're tired = not fun, and a lot harder than it needs to be.
The prep for labs is a sheet of pre-lab questions, usually answered through stuff you should know from lecture and from reading through the lab procedure. These need to be handed in before you start your lab, or they're "supposed" to not let you do it (though I've never seen that rule enforced). They're also usually worth 10% of your mark for that lab, which in the grand scheme of things isn't a lot, but hey, it's pretty much free marks. All this means for morning labs is that you'd have to remember to do it the night before, or get up even earlier to complete it.
