Software is. Hardware is hardware though. They provide a backup system for a reason.
Windows 7 Blue Screen Count (Since December): 5 (3 not in virtual machines)
Mac "Blue Screen" Count: 2
I'm hard on computers, but even so, Windows fails me far more often then mac.

Hmm, sounds like the drive head broke then. It happens usually after an impact, but can also occur simply from old age.
So ya, your only option at this point is to take it to a data recovery place (which will probably run you close to 500 dollars).

If you take out the hard drive and insulate it in a plastic bag, and then put it in the freezer for 4 hours, this can sometimes hold the components in place long enough that you can recover the data before it thaws again. I've heard rumours of people getting it working for up to a half hour, which I think should be enough time to recover your school files.

I'd love to see this work, I should see if my housemate still has his harddrive, it just failed on him last week.
ALSO, you're pretty much done. Sorry. Seriously it sucks.
I actually need to get my stuff backed up because my harddrive has been acting up a bit lately, the SMART status is showing FAILING :(
