HELPP Macbook hard drive crashed and exam on wednesday
So my macbook hard drive completely crashed and i have exams starting on Wednesday.. so like an idiot i trusted that my mac would never fail and never backed up any of my information.. all the notes i ever took in class were taken on the computer beneath the powerpoint slides.. so i drove all the way to toronto to fix my macbook at the apple store but they don't retrieve data from hard drives, went to a few computer stores where they told me that it would take 2-3 weeks to retrieve my data, however by then exams would obviously be over and did i mention it costs $600- 1200 dollars to retrieve it, which is money i don't have..

Anybody have any ideas as to where i should go from here..

I don't know anyone in any of my classes.. not quite the social butterfly..

HELPPP!!!

How's it broken? If it's not physical damage, the data may still be recoverable from another computer.

Hmm, sounds like the drive head broke then. It happens usually after an impact, but can also occur simply from old age.

So ya, your only option at this point is to take it to a data recovery place (which will probably run you close to 500 dollars).

There is also one other "maybe" possible solution, but it's kind of extreme. If you take out the hard drive and insulate it in a plastic bag, and then put it in the freezer for 4 hours, this can sometimes hold the components in place long enough that you can recover the data before it thaws again. I've heard rumours of people getting it working for up to a half hour, which I think should be enough time to recover your school files.

Software is. Hardware is hardware though. They provide a backup system for a reason.

Windows 7 Blue Screen Count (Since December): 5 (3 not in virtual machines)
Mac "Blue Screen" Count: 2

I'm hard on computers, but even so, Windows fails me far more often then mac.

Written while booted into windows. (Stupid Minitab and Quartus)

I'd love to see this work, I should see if my housemate still has his harddrive, it just failed on him last week.

ALSO, you're pretty much done. Sorry. Seriously it sucks.
I actually need to get my stuff backed up because my harddrive has been acting up a bit lately, the SMART status is showing FAILING :(

The same thing happened to my uncle's Mac when I shut it and moved it without letting it go to sleep.
I believe all data was wiped.

Okay so I had exactly the same thing happen to e last year about a month before exams so I brought it to a computer place in downtown Hamilton that specializes in Macs, it's actually where the techs on campus send any macs with problems to. The name of the place is Light Computer Center. They weren't able to retrieve my data but they might be able to with yours. Also I ended up having to get a new hard drive for my computer and they had it done in about 3 or 4 days. So they're some awesome people there.

These are based off of Dr. Wood's lectures. From what I've heard, they haven't changed - McClelland used them as well. =p

lol
love how mac users don't know how to use computers.

[email protected] guy with both win7 and osx counting the number of crashes.
I've had win7 for a few months and zero crashes.

and my last laptop, which I had for 3+ years, with windows XP had ZERO blue screens.
