Honours Life Science?
I am going into my first year in Life Science this year. I'm just wondering what the biggest difference is between an Honours B.Sc (either Honours Biology or Life Science) and a regular B. Sc. I know the regular program is 3 years, rather than 4, but what else?

These are the course requirements for a BSc in Life Sci: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1958.html

And for an HBSc in Life Sci: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1957.html

And HBSc in Bio: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...nt/pg1538.html

In addition to the extra year, you have the opportunity for a thesis/research project with a 4-yr degree, can take more specialized/upper level courses, and this is necessary if you want to pursue graduate studies in the field. I think, for many people in science, the four-year degree is the "default".

If you want to go to professional school, where they generally only look at required courses (though this isn't always the case), a 3-yr degree should be fine.

If you're in the three-year program, you would need special permission to take Chem 2OA3/2OB3.

Well I'm possibly thinking about a medical school program afterwards, but I want to wait until after first year to decide in case i change my mind. If I decide to go to medical school, the B. Sc. is enough?

Honestly, that would depend on the medical school. Some of the more prestigious ones require a 4-year degree. Regardless though, a 4-year honors degree would be more competitive.

I'm pretty sure the first year is the same regardless, so you don't have to make any decisions right away

Most med schools require a 4-year degree. I would check the requirements of the med schools you're interested in just to be sure. Don't worry though, you have plenty of time and can definitely decide about that after first year .

You're welcome! Also, just to be 110% sure, when school starts, or even now if you'd like (not sure of their hours though), be sure to see an academic advisor to get everything cleared up! I also recommend seeing one of the counselors in Science Career & Co-operative Ed. to ask them about med schools and such

Do honours, you can always just choose to graduate with a 3 year degree if you get in early to said professional school.
