Yes.

By the way, a specialization is not going to help you get into med school or dental school.

But a thesis on the other hand, is a benefit.

Doing a thesis may also give you an opportunity to work in the lab over the summer with either McWork or NSERC =)

You can work or volunteer in a lab even if you are not in a specialization.
If have OSAP or are in financial need, check out the McWork summer jobs starting today, March 1st on OSCAR. There are a ton of science- lab and clinical jobs.

If not send out an email asking your prof if they are concidering hiring students for the summer or even for volunteer positions. That way there is no stress as to if you will get `rejected` and if they ever do need someone in the future they may remember your eagerness to participate. ps: its helps to know about what they do and mention it as well (who doesn`t like a little flattery).

There are many profs who are willing to hire 2nd and third year students so that they are experienced in their lab for their thesis in fourth year
