Horizon Utilities
Hey, I'm going to be moving in to a place on Monday and I just opened an account with Horizon last Thursday, they haven't processes my account yet, does anyone know how long it takes? I don't want to move in when there's not electricity/water, thanks.

Is the electricity currently up?

I think mine took about a week (maybe less), basically the electricity was in the landlord's name until my move-in date, and even though you're not fully transferred, once everything is done you will be billed starting from your move-in date (or the date on your lease). I'm fairly certain that the automated new meters will facilitate this. I was told that as long as I transferred things within the month, the power wouldn't be shut off.

(I did a big project on Smart Meters this term.. ughhhhhhhh)

My account was processed in 24 hours, was it last thursday (as in the 22nd) that you applied? If so that's really long and I'd give them a call (they may be held up on something like needing a security deposit or authorization to do a credit check on you).

They're highly unlikely to turn the electricity off, that actually requires intervention on their part and wouldn't likely be done unless the previous tenant was past due.

Your power will be on when you get there. It takes them awhile to contact you because they really aren't too concerned until your first billing period. You will have to pay a new account or transfer fee of around $100. You can have that split over the first two bills if you want though. They will likely be out to do a meter read shortly to catch the kWh at changeover of account so that they can split the final bill to the previous owner and the new bill to you (as they normally only bill on two months consumption).

While they have rolled out smart meter installations, I don't believe horizon has a functioning network for them and are likely still doing traditional meter reads like everyone else. Give it a year or so before the full connectivity starts popping up as they have to install all the wireless points and establish a mesh first.

Give them two weeks and its likely coming in standard mail, I don't believe they will contact you via email until you have registered for online access to services on their site (that took I think another week or two as they send the info in the mail for that too).

Pretty much no news is good news, you will have to contact them if you want details otherwise wait until the bills start coming in.

When I moved to my new apartment in Hamilton, the electricity was already up from the past tenant, but I waited too long to contact them. I finally did and I just went down to be there when they came to turn it on. I believe I had to pay them a fee upfront as well.

Wow... starting up an account with them, $300 security deposit! They split it over the first two months but that's still ridiculous...

Yeah! That's the fee I had to pay, however, since my mother has an account with Toronto Hydro, I got a discount and only paid like 57 something.

We had to pay $100 dollars when we moved into our apartment as a deposit we should get it back on our bills 12 months after we moved in. I would suggest calling to get your account all set up. The representive was very help ful and I have yet to have a problem. They will not turn your electricity off until the next billing period but you need to make sure that they know when you are moving in so they don't bill you for the pervious tenant.
