HST charge on textbooks?
I noticed on my reciepts today that I've been charged HST twice,
one says "HST 13%" and underneath it "HST 5%"
is this something I should be concerned about or is this normal?
also, what's "prov tax"?

Did you only buy textbooks? If you bought different types of merchandise, they might be taxed in different ways; some at 5%, some at 13%.

I'm not sure about what exactly gets taxed, but if you look on your reciept next to the individual items it should indicate which items were taxed. You can also look at the total amount of tax you recieved under the 13% and 5% and figure it out that way.
Used textbooks are NOT taxed, though

Ohh, I see.
I figured out that yeah, some of the material was taxed at only 5% and others were taxed at 13%, so it makes sense now thanks~

Just out of curiosity, what items were taxed at each percentage?

I'm not sure, I can't seem to figure that out from the reciept, but I figure that the chemistry 1A03 textbook and lab book were charged at 5%, and the math 1LS3 custom courseware was charged at 13%.

If you want the nitty gritty details of what gets charged HST at 13% and what gets rebated the 8% provincial portion (as far as books go) you can check out the CRA info sheet here:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/gi/gi-065/gi-065-e.pdf
In short here's what you should have been charged:
textbook: definitely 5%
lab book: 5% if its instructional and isn't primarily for writing in, 13% if its a blank one you write in
courseware: depends on the material in the courseware, if its a reprint of magazine and newspaper articles, then definitely 13%, but if its an out of print textbook then maybe only 5%. Some types of courseware seem to fall through the cracks in the CRA info sheet so I'm really not sure on this one.
