Increase in grade point?
Would a prof increase you with one grade point if you took the effort to go and talk to them. Only one and nothing more.

...Depends on what your final mark (percentage wise) in the course is.

79.3%? Then maybe you can get bumped to an 80. 86.2%? No way you're getting bumped to a 90 (i.e., a 12).

Often the profs already bump people at the cusp, so if you didn't get the grade you want it's unlikely that they will boost your mark.

Can't hurt to try though, just don't expect anything.

It also depends on the prof themselves (some will refuse, some are more lenient), the size of the class (in larger classes typically not), and the number of profs for the class (multiple profs--probably not). Also if they already bumped everyone up by a certain amount, I doubt they'd bump you up more...

I did pretty well in a course last term and needed a 69% on the exam to get a 12. I ended up with a 68%... the exam had two essay style questions. I got 15/15 on one of them and 2/10 on the other one. I reviewed my exam paper... but it was difficult to argue as it was a subjective assessment. I am still unsure where I went so wrong...

I was really interested in the course and the prof was very good at teaching it. So, I mostly sat on the front seat of the class and actively participated in class discussions. The prof definitely knew me and said hello to me outside of class.

Am I upset? Yes, because I loved the course, tried hard and missed the next grade point by just one percent. Is the prof justified in not increasing my mark? Yes, probably.

I doubt the prof will increase your mark by one whole grade point "
if you took the effort to go and talk to them" :(

Don't get your hopes up... but it doesn't hurt to try I guess.

And this is why subjective marking sucks.

I don't understand why people go and beg for marks. It must be so annoying for the professors!

I wouldn't ask because I'd feel like I didn't get it fair and square. But that's just me

I agree...I'd feel really guilty. But in certain cases people feel like they really did deserve it. It depends on the circumstances, I guess.

You know absolutely nothing about my grades. I'm quite happy with most of them. There are instances where I've gotten an 11 and felt I deserved a 12 (For example, I chose to do an optional assignment that brought my mark just below a 12, whereas if I hadn't done it I would have gotten a 12), and I still would not dare go ask for a mark bump. It was my choice, and it sucks, and things like that have happened to me before and since. There's a difference between wanting justification for getting below a 12 (which is reasonable) and asking for a mark bump every time you don't get a 12.

The reason I would feel guilty is that I highly doubt I'm the only one in the class who would like a mark bump, so why the hell should I get one and not anyone else? I guess that's integrity or whatever...but it's what has stopped me from ever asking to be bumped up.

Never hurts to ask. I had a course where the prof posted the exam grades and I was one multiple choice question shy of a 12 and he bumped it.

I LOVE how you tell nerual of all people that she sucks at school...
It's also kind of weird how you mention 10.8 as some arbitrary cutoff where you feel surprised for not getting a 12. I don't really see how 10.8 has anything to do with expecting 12s since the two marks are rather far apart. If your GPA was more like .... 11.9, then maybe I could see you expecting some justification for not getting a 12. But having around a 10.8 means all your marks could be 11 and a couple marks could be a 10, and you would "need justification for not getting 12s"?

Personal judgement of people you've never met IRL and know nothing about based on a few forum posts is pretty uncalled for.

And as for both the users, I recommend speaking to the professor. I've never asked for a grade bump, even in one course where I have a strong feeling I was just a percent shy of a 12 given that every other midterm + assignments were above a 90%, but it's really your decision. Markers can make mistakes totalling up things like essay marks, or even just enter a grade wrong. If you have strong reason to feel you earned a different grade and not just "I didn't do any work, please bump me so that it doesn't look awful on my transcript" and have a consistent history of working hard, there's no harm in inquiring about your mark. It's your effort. I'd also recommend asking whether you can see the grades you received for the course and see the exam in person. That way you can check for marking errors and calculation errors and decide if you still want the rounding if you feel its justified, but it'd be a lot less intimidating.

Bro don't you know 10.8 is what separates the men from the boys? 10.7 is just not acceptable. 11.8 is what separates the men from the gods
