Kinesiology to Health Sciences
Hey guys!
I'm entering the Kin program at MAC but recently one of my friends convinced me that health sci is a great program as well.
I want to leave my options open for entry in Level II of health sci, but when i looked on the course pre-reqs for health sci II, you need one full year of bio and chem, which takes up all 4 of the electives i have for first year kin.
(i.e. i have to take 6 prescribed kin courses + bio1, bio2, chem1 and chem2)

Is this schedule possible to obtain and would it be too tough for a first year student?
I've also applied to Life Sci, would that serve as an easier entry-basis for level II health sci?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Yes. You should have no problem. As far as workload you shouldn't be as worse off as many Life Sci Students. You'll have about 18 hours a week of class on average.

Thanks!
But i also read that in order to get into the B.Sc.Kin program you need a first year math completed.
Is it okay if i complete it the 2nd year? will i be at a disadvantage?

First year calc is required to graduate from kin. You are encourage to complete it by the end of second year. I know plenty of people who took it in their second year no problem.

If you really want, you can knock out your calc course and your stats course over your first summer and then all your non-kin courses would be electives from then on.

I would recommend making a definite decision regarding whether you want to be in health sci or not now. If you do, then you can plan to fulfill one set of requirements, instead of both simultaneously.

Bio and Chem are great electives, but if you're trying to take them only because you're trying to transfer, that's the wrong type of motivation. Besides, Kin isn't so bad, it has a lot of really interesting courses and focuses intensively on the human body.

I've decided that I definitely want to try my best to get into Health Sci in Level II and I understand that the competition is rigorous. So what would you suggest in this case if my ultimate goal is medicine?

If your ultimate goal is medicine, Health Sci is definitely the program tailored to that (particularly Mac's med school). However, the knowledge you get from a Kin undergrad can also be invaluable, even though it's not a strict pre-req. I've heard that many applicants from Kin are successful.

The only thing that "might" be tricky if you have a weaker math background is Biomechanics, Kin 2A03 (not saying you do, but anyone who does might have a bit of trouble). It's not an overly difficult course and is akin to a first year physics course, Physics 1B03.

That being said, I agree with your current mindset. If you have your heart set on transferring then I recommend simply keeping your eyes on the prize, take your bios and chems this year, try your best to get in. It's ok to take math next year if you don't get accepted.

its good that u understand competition will be rigorous. because it will be

like other ppl have suggested, 6 kin courses + 2 bio + 2 chem is definitely doable, but u must always be on top of everything. it gets tricky in bio and chem (IMO) because tests and exams are multiple choice (and while u think u know ur stuff, there are always random questions that test ur ability to recall tiny details from the first week of the term than ur overall understanding of the concepts).

that being said these courses are very interesting and taught by some of the best profs at mac, so u will have a good time in these classes.

bottom line is: DONT PROCRASTINATE. attempt to review everything every week. make learning fun and enjoyable by studying with a group of fun and dedicated students...AND JUST HAVE FUN.

I was in Life Sci, and I came into uni overestimating myself and took a lot of sciences and maths. at the end, the result wasn't so great because i had horrible time management skills.

good luck in your program, and if u get accepted to life sci as well, i would recommend that u stick with kin (it is more fun than life sci imo)
