Lorrie Moore's short stories in Like Life. After reading this I think I like her short stories about the of everyday lives of women, replete with ennui and dissatisfaction, as much or even more than Alice Munroe's.

Mitchell Duneier's Sidewalk. A pretty cool urban ethnography covering the lives of black men surviving by creatively and strategically selling books and magazines in a small makeshift economy on the sidewalks of Greenwich Village.

A Short History of Progress, it was for a course, it was BOOOOORING, you want the good stuff

last read: A Dance with Dragons - George R.R. Martin

currently reading: A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin

The books are a million times better than the show. A Game of Thrones is the first fiction book I've ever started re-reading. It's THAT good. There is so much detail and history not seen in the show that I was able to read A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings after seeing the show and I didn't get bored at all.

For people who don't know, here is my attempt at explaining the novels: Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire as the book series is called) is set in an alternate universe, not unlike our own medieval times (except there is magic). The King dies and many people lay claim to the throne so there is a huge struggle and the book series basically follows that. Each chapter is told through the point of view of various characters. The story has a huge backstory and thousands of minor characters, some not as minor as they seem. As for its content it is extremely violent and philosophical.
