How to learn Excel
Hello all,

One of my friends in Enviro Sci asked me if I knew whether McMaster offers any courses that teach you excel, to my knowledge there aren't any; Does anyone have a recommended guide for how one can learn excel individually at home or via an institution/tutor?

I found a website on Reddit that might be useful:

Excel should never be a course in an institution of higher learning.

At most, in a University, it should be something that Student Societies offer to students as tutorials. I had been advocating for this since a conference a couple years ago when I found out a couple other Engineering Socities were offering it to students... That and MATLAB tutorials.

I thought excel was one of those things you gradually figured out over the years. A bit of googling and asking TAs. :s

The course description for COMP SCI 1TA3 says that it includes problem solving with electronic spreadsheets.

I think that is a project perfectly suited for McMaster Engineering Society, the MSU doesn't tend to intervene in the jurisdiction of Academic Faculty Societies and as such historically has offered no such program. Secondly, since my term is up in two months it wouldn't be feasible for me to take this on; I'll personally pass this comment on to the MES though!

My fluid mechanics course got full reigns of the course this term and the tutorials fully teach and test excel. More courses like this need to do that.

My mom is a secretary. She is no pro but excel is TOO vast for us meak weakling. Excel OP

i feel like an excel tutorial would also be beneficial to other programs besides engineering, so it may be wise to have the same people that run those resume and cover letter workshops do this kind of stuff. or someone that does it fro everyone. Excel is huge in biology so science students will benefit from it a lot as well.

I just remembered that the Lyons Media Centre in Mills lets you access Lynda.com. I'm sure there are Excel tutorials there.

Some of the introductory computer science courses go over excel and spreadsheet style programs in their courses. An example would be Comp Sci 1TA3
