Linguistics is the scientific study of language. In 1A03, you will deal with 3 main branches of linguistics: phonetics (sounds of human language), phonology (how sounds are systematically used in a language), and morphology (structure and content of words).

For the first half of the course, you will familiarize yourself with the phonetic alphabet. You will learn about how different sounds are produced and also translate English words into phonetic symbols. Later on in the course, you will learn about speech phenomena (such as why people say "pusghetti" instead of spaghetti). Then, near the end of the course you will do phonology and morphology problems, where you're given a set of data to analyze and draw conclusions from.

There is a midterm exam, weekly assignments, and sometimes quizzes in tutorial. I'd definitely recommend the course. An outline can be located at http://www.humanities.mcmast er.ca/....php?cno =547

textbook
Did people who've taken this course find it helpful to purchase the "Contemporary Linguistics Analysis" textbook by O'Grady?

Or were there any other materials that would be helpful to purchase?

There weren't any required readings for 1A03, although there was a bonus question on the midterm about something in the text. I found that the textbook was often helpful for assignments because some of the questions were similar to things gone over in detail in the text. The textbook is much more helpful for 1AA3, IMO, because it gives you more exposure to syntactic trees. I would definitely purchase it -- you can always sell it next year.

For the most part, the term 2 booklist isn't released until closer to term 2. A lot of the times professors haven't been assigned yet or they haven't written the syllabus yet.

Was it advantageous to have a tutorial for Linguistics 1A03 near the end of the week? Or does it not really matter?

Ling 1A03 and 1AA3 (as far as I know) use the same texts. There's only the textbook and workbook that's needed.
As for the course, I really enjoyed it. It's my personal opinion, of course, but I think not only was it pretty interesting, but as well, an easy course to get 10+!
For the tutorials, it really doesn't matter if tutorials are near the beginning or end of the week.
