I took it last year with Dr. Stroinska who then got into an accident and was replaced by Dr. Thomas.
Dr. Stroinska is amazing. Very interactive and approachable. She got into a skiing accident I heard, which I think is pretty badass.
Dr. Thomas is really dry and changed the syllabus completly to fit his expertise and it was a bit of an awkward transition because he's nub at technology (made avenue a mess and couldn't work a powerpoint presentation), but told us every question on the final so we were able to think about it ahead of time and plan accordingly. He's a very strong believer in no surprises on tests.
The marks are made up of 3 assignments, one midterm and a final (don't remember the weighting). All of which I found were easy, but I've heard some people say they marked hard on the assignments. Before each assignment is due a T.A. will go over all the expectations and outline everything. Each assignment is 4 or 5 pages double-spaced if I remember correctly. The assignments basically ask you to apply what you've learned in class to different situations. For example, the first one was to examine the communication of a salesperson, so we had to go and try and carry on a conversation about a product with a salesperson. Not much further research was needed.
Most of the material (from Stroinska) is straight forward and if you know basic social skills, you shouldn't have trouble understanding the definitions. It basically puts a name to the habits and behaviours which you probably already know unconciously (e.g. body space between you and a friend vs. you and a stranger).
I actually really enjoyed going to the lectures (until Dr. Thomas) even though lectures weren't really needed to understand the materal. A lot of people stopped showing up when Dr. Thomas started lecturing including myself. I pretty much just went to the exam review class where he told us all the questions and I googled/read the textbook because his slides are very minimal.
I say it's pretty bird, other's say the assignments were marked hard. *shrug*
