I've heard from a bunch of people it's in the mid 30's, but the timetable in the engineering booklet showed about 25-28. What should I expect?

6-7hrs a day times 5?
The mentioned 30 hours doesn't include study time, though. . .

I counted 33 in my mock timetable. Guess it depends what electives you took, and which semester some of your engineer courses are *shrug*

How? Explain. Your assuming skipping == failing... quite the opposite. 12's come from skipped all lectures and studying at home

Everyone doesn't learn the material from skipping all the lectures and studying at home.

But sometimes the lectures and prof's way of teaching can be useless and a waste of time.

This is not high school where the teachers spoon feed you all of the important information. The majority of professors do a bad job at teaching, they read off their notes at a slow pace typically with a monotone voice. Buy the textbook, read the textbook and do the problems.

You're assuming that all the courses one takes (at least in first year) requires the use of a textbook.

Not trying to be snarky or anything, but you use a poor choice of words. He isn't assuming anything since he's lived it. You're the one assuming things since you haven't started first year yet.

Its not terrible to skip classes... as other have stated, some professors are just not skilled teachers. I mean, teaching really isn't a huge priority to a lot of them (especially in upper years)

30 hrs sounds about right I guess. But remember everyday isn't like 6-7 hours. You'll have good days were you finish at 1 in the afternoon and bad days were you have a lab ending at 5 or 6 then a test right after. Also minus the time were attending lectures are pretty much useless like others have stated in here already...

He hasn't gone through each first year class so he is still assuming that you need a textbook for each class to succeed basically.

Ummmm... Yes. He has. 3rd year + Co=op right now. You don't get through first year engineering (as you asked about) and get a co-op without completing all first year classes.

If you are now referring to other faculties, you did not mention so, and therefore he is still right, and you are getting this conversation confused.

Just sayin'.
