I know when I first started university, I thought that my attendance would be reflected in my marks.

You find out pretty quickly that it's often smarter to skip class and use the time to study on your own.

Then where do you get all the material to study from? An upper year friend/person or a friend/person who has attended all the lectures in the time frame of your class?

Nah, totally unnecessary.

In some classes, you can read the textbook, make your own notes, and you'll be fine.
Other classes, the textbook is useless or there is no textbook, but the notes online are already filled out so you can just learn those and you have no need to go to class.

Some classes it's a mix of both.

And the rest of the classes where things are said in lecture that aren't in the notes - those are the classes you should not skip (if you want to do well ^_^).
