MATH 1LS3 mark calculation?
so, on the site it says this:
FORMULA WE WILL USE TO CALCULATE FINAL COURSE MARK [t=test mark, with lowest test dropped; f=final exam mark] your final course mark = better of 60%t+40%f and 10%t+90%f.
You do not have to tell us which of the two options you prefer. The software that calculates your final mark will automatically choose the option that's better for you.
this probably seems like a stupid question, but I'm asking anyway: what does this mean? I understand the mark break up, but do the two options mean that if I do poorly on all the tests, then I can still do well in the course if I ace the exam, because they'll automatically choose the 10%+90% system? Someone explain please?

You're right. That is a stupid question. =p
But yeah, you understand it correctly. I'm not really sure what else you want us to explain since it's pretty clear.

if u do good on the tests and ok and the exam then tests are worth 60% of mark and exams 40%... if u messed up on the testsbut did awesome on the exam then tests worth 10% and exam 90%... basically the do both calculations and whichever get u the better mark is the mark u get
so yes... u can technically get a 90% even if u failed all the tests

That whole course is too good to be true.
- relatively easy math
- lowest test mark dropped
- some of the best-looking profs at Mac
- you can skip the entire course including the three tests, get 100 on the exam, and still walk away with a 12

In theory, yes. However, getting 100 on exam is easier said than done.
Unless you do calculus for fun, I'd suggest go the safe route and do all the tests and assignments.

wait.. so... the exam is more difficult than the tests? I didn't do very well on the tests because I didn't put as much time into practicing the concepts as I should have... but I figured by the exam I'd have the concepts nailed down enough to get a decent mark.

AHhh, I hated that question too DX. Pretty sure I got most of it wrong.. And yes, the exam was harder than the tests. Study well for it and ahead of time.. Math can't be crammed in the night before, unfortunately :(
