Besides, we all know during a recession everyone wants plumbers and no one gives a dink about computers. :p

If you knew software you'd understand. Recession means dick. People who are worth a damn will be fine in a recession. Plant closes down? The people who are worth their pay will be clever enough to make it through.
People don't want Software Engineers without experience period. You can't prove you can do dick, and they don't want to pay you to train you on-the-job. The difference between that and graduating from Comp Sci, is comp sci kids don't need to have experience to do basic code. ****, anyone can do basic entry-level code. The thing is that Software Engineers will be expecting too much, nevermind they are trained so they WON'T end up doing the poop work.
Even in that argument, depending on the situation, for entry-level positions of this nature, a kid straight outta a 3 year software development program in college will get preference to someone with a degree. Again for reasons of pay-expectations, and the fact that a University focuses a lot more on theory, than practicality and application, whereas college will teach you how to get the job done. Go look at the curricula @ mohawk even. You don't take classes on IT ethics and bullshit, you program like a mother ****er.
