McMaster to Ban Plastic Bags on Campus

McMaster to Ban Plastic Bags on Campus

Mcmaster University is becoming one of the first campuses in Canada to ban the use of plastic bags. The distribution of plastic bags intended for single use will be completely banned at McMaster University effective January 1, 2010. To coincide with the ban, McMaster Student Union distributed 9,000 reusable cloth bags filled with freebies and campus information during the Welcome Week this year. Furthermore the university bookstore Titles will give out 20,000 free biodegradable tote bags to students who spend more than $25.

The following alternatives are still permitted, ranked in terms of preference:
1. Reusable bags made from biodegradable or cloth material
2. Reusable bags made from non-biodegradable material
3. Paper bags
4. Biodegradable plastic bags intended for single use

I really like the bags that Titles and the MSU gave out this year. Glad that McMaster is making this move.

The Titles bags were nice this year, even nicer than the ones they had last year. I'm glad I bought my texts early and got one.

Nice. I like the cloth bags, I can use them over and over again. I suppose that's the point though.

I like anything thats good for the environment and its a good move, but cloth bags are easier to use for girls than guys IMO. Girls don't mind carrying these things from what I can tell, but I don't think I've seen any young guys carrying one...ever. lol...It just doesn't look cool, thats why we don't like it...but who knows it might become hip haha :p

Also along these lines:

There is also a movement in partnership between the University admin and the MSU to ban the sale of bottled water on campus.

The hope is to see this happen this year in a phased process before April.
