Message from SOCS
to MacInsider members
Hello MacInsider Members!
We would like to extend a big welcome to the new incoming first year students – we hope you all enjoy the next few years at this great school that you can start calling your home away from home!
We are the Society of Off Campus Students, better known as SOCS for short. SOCS is a student run organization that has been around for over 25 years now and can be described as a residence for off campus students. We want to ensure that every off campus student has the same opportunities as residence students do. A common myth is that if you are not living on campus, you cannot have a great experience – this is not true and that is why we are here, to help you along your way and to ensure you have just as many outlets to get involved and stay involved in the McMaster community!
We run all the Welcome Week events for off campus students as well as co-plan university wide events with the residence Welcome Week planners so that all students have many chances to meet each other during the week. Aside from Welcome Week, SOCS plans a multitude of events throughout the year, ranging from karaoke nights, open mic nights, Academic Success Series, including “How to prepare for exams” and many more important topics, our very popular SOCS formal, Frost Week events, and many many more! With a SOCS membership, you will receive discounts to our events, discounts at our local area sponsors, free intramurals and the opportunity to join our committees – social, charity or executive advisory.
For first year students, when you purchase your MacPass, which is your ticket to Welcome Week, you will receive a SOCS membership included in your pass. For all other students, you can purchase a SOCS membership at Clubsfest, during Welcome Week, on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 or you can purchase one at any time during the year. Just come and visit us at our office, anytime after Welcome Week, in the basement of the student centre, MUSC B109!
SOCS will kick off Welcome Week with the OFF CAMPUS CONNECTION on Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 at 9:30am in the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC). All first year off campus students are encouraged to attend and will then receive a free bbq lunch! Please see your invitation that was sent to you in the mail this summer and make sure to rsvp to [email protected] if you have not already!
We encourage all first year students to attend Welcome Week, as it is one of the best experiences you will have during your time at McMaster!! We hope to see all students out to our events during the year – whether you live on or off campus, as they are open to everyone!
For more information, visit our website at www.mcmaster.ca/socs or email us at [email protected]
Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you all in September!!
Proudly Off Campus,
Maria Topalovic
SOCS President 07-08
Note: MacInsiders will be doing an exclusive video interview with Maria in September!
