MFNSA Welcoming Powwow September 25 2009

The McMaster First Nations Student Association (MFNSA) will be hosting a Welcoming Powwow on Friday September 25th 2009 from 11:30am to 3:30pm in front of JHE (John Hodgins Engineering) building.

This powwow will be MFNSA's first event of the year, and the first powwow held on the McMaster campus in recent years. The powwow is a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the creation of MFNSA in 1989. The event allows MFNSA to inform students, staff and faculty about Indigenous cultures on campus, as well as promote the Indigenous Studies Program at McMaster University.

There will be a number of different demonstrations at the event, including dancing, singing and drumming. Some of the participants will be giving presentations about the different styles of dances and about the dances themselves. There will be information tables from a few different groups, including MFNSA, the Indigenous Studies Program, and the Aboriginal Health Sciences Program. Traditional cuisine samples which include strawberry drink, Three Sisters Soup, bannock, and wild rice will be available. Speakers from the Indigenous Studies Program will also be in attendance.

All Pow Wow Festivals are Alcohol and Drug Free.Powwows have strict rules against alcohol and drug use in the entire area of the powwow, and most prohibit smoking near the site
Pictures during the Flag, Prayer, Honour Songs and when an individual is honouring a drum through a whistle- should not be taken.
Guests are asked to stand and remove your hat for certain songs. You do not have to remove your hat if you have an eagle feather in it.
Tradition is to respect visiting chiefs and elders by giving them priority for all matters of etiquette.
Do not crowd around the drummers.
Always ask for permission before making any recordings.
Children are welcome to enjoy this event, but cannot play in the Sacred Circle.
Participants are asked to respect the arena director, head male dancer and head female dancer.
Respect the work of the security committee as their time is valuable.

Is there an event schedule? I'd like to come, but I can't make the full 4 hours.

It's mostly drop-by. There are two separate times food is being offered, and the dancers and drummers will need a break for lunch for instance.

There will be many events occurring simultaneously tomorrow, so come whenever you have free time if you are interested.

You won't be able to miss the tent or not hear the drumming if you're on that side of campus.
