Update from CAW Local 555 Unit 1 (representing approximately 2200 administrative and technical workers)

Collective Bargaining Update - August 24

Employees who are members of the CAW, Local 555 Unit 1 bargaining unit will have the opportunity to vote directly on whether they accept or reject the University's Final Offer that was tabled last week.
A message from the University's bargaining team said, "The University continues to respect that CAW is the bargaining agent for staff at the University but despite 21 days of bargaining, we have not been able to reach a new agreement. We believe that it is in everyone's best interest, especially our students, that we reach a timely conclusion to this round of bargaining so we tabled our Final Offer to Settle with the union on August 20.
Since then, we have continued to hear concerns that the September 1st strike date that was chosen by the union was fast approaching. We have once again reviewed our options and have decided to file an application with the Ministry of Labour for a Final Offer Vote." (The full text of the bargaining team message can be found here.)
A Final Offer vote is supervised by the Ministry of Labour through the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB). It is a secret ballot. A Frequently Asked Questions document on final offer votes is available here.
The details of the vote have not yet been determined but should be announced by the OLRB within the next few days.
The memo from the University's bargaining team also said that they, "will be available to meet with the union at anytime as we move towards the scheduled August 31 bargaining date to help to clarify any questions or address any issues the union may have."
CAW, Local 555 Unit 1 represents about 2200 support and technical staff that provide services in areas across the University. Additional information on labour relations is available here.

Just got this email.

McMaster is currently in contract negotiations with the union representing support staff at the University. These employees are represented by the Canadian Auto Workers. Though we are continuing to negotiate and hope to reach a settlement, the union has established a strike deadline of September 1. While this does not mean there will be a strike, it is a possibility. The University will remain open and classes will continue if there is a strike.

We want to ensure that students are as prepared as possible before September 1. If a strike does occur, priority services will be maintained but office hours will be shortened and it may become difficult to get assistance without significant delays. Some non-essential services may be suspended.

If you intend to add or drop courses or modify your schedule, or if you have not yet completed your payment agreement, we strongly advise you to complete these activities before September 1. After that date, registration and other related activities may be suspended, and you may not be able to change your courses or schedule.

You may complete your registration through the following steps:

1. Log on to MUGSI and access SOLAR (which is under the ‘Academics’ button) and select your courses. (https://adweb.cis.mcmaster.ca /cis/ahtml/login.htm)

2. Complete the Payment Agreement which is also located in SOLAR.

3. Log on to MUGSI and check your schedule – this can be found under the ‘Academics’ button and is called the ‘Undergrad Personal Timetable’.

4. If there are any conflicts in your schedule, resolve the issue(s) by choosing another section or by dropping/adding different courses.

First year students are encouraged to complete the New Student Form and submit it either in-person or via mail to the Office of the Registrar in Gilmour Hall Room 108, if you have not already done so.

You may also want to check your booklist and purchase your books. See http://titles.mcmaster.ca/
In addition, if you have applied for OSAP please ensure that you have submitted supporting documentation and signature pages, and pick up your OSAP as soon as funding has been issued according to the OSAP website. Please visit the financial aid website for details at http://sfas.mcmaster.ca/

We will be keeping students informed of key developments as we continue to negotiate with CAW. Please check McMaster’s Daily News http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca website for updates on negotiations.

Just an update:
The potential for a strike by CAW, Local 555 Unit 1 has shifted from September 1 to September 4 as the University and the union have mutually agreed that a potential strike date will be moved.
