Is this a joke, that movie looks really boring and as far as possible away from Cheri's interests (read:dark)...
still in the process of trying to figure out why I watched that trailer for more than 1 minute

You're not really looking for a "dark" movie, rather something macabre, campy and cheesy.

Stuff like pre-LOTR Peter Jackson (Dead Alive, Bad Taste) or The Evil Dead trilogy. It's really not my genre at all so I don't really know what to suggest that's contemporary. Try Teeth or Piranha 3D?

And just to throw it out there, Incendies was the best movie I've seen this year. I don't know if "dark" is the right adjective, it was pretty well lit, but a bus full of refugees does get shot up and set on fire.

I just saw this one last night. It was good.

I would suggest Scott Pilgrim. I thought I wouldn't like it, but it's surprisingly different and cool. And there's one or two Arrested Development jokes thrown in there, if you're a fan.

Scott Pilgrim was a great movie - it didn't make a lot of money in the box office though, which was unfortuante.

Anyways, some "dark" movies that I want to watch again, and suggest to you would be:
The Shawshank Redemption
Training Day

Obviously, it's not as dark as you mentioned in your OP but they are still pretty dark, and in my opinion, amazing movies.

Am I the only person who hated Cloverfield?

I wanted a "Godzilla-like creature kills city" movie, and I got a not-even-interesting love story where I see the creature twice and am nauseated by a shaking camera the entire time.

To each their own. My friends loved it.

I hate those shaking cams type.

Always make my stomach curl. But some scene of Cloverfield was good though.

For some reason, I expected it to stop happening. As though it would just get better without any explanation.:rolleyes :

A few minutes into it, I realized I had made a mistake.
