How much does it take to live comfortably
Hey so i've been thinking about this for a while now....

But how much do you suppose it takes to live a comfortable life, in terms of money.

Now im sure this depends on the person, whether they choose to get married, or have kids, and what they want to do and see within their life.

But suppose we break it down to the basics. to have a cosy home, nothing big, live comfortably, go out every now and then. etc. etc. etc. (heck, even break it down into whether you get married and have kids or single, or no kids)

How much do you think, per year, would one need to live a comfortable life style.

............

Also, im interested in knowing how much you, as in you yourself in the lifestyle that you want, need to live comfortably, and what is that lifestyle that you are aiming for.

If I were to own a decent house (nothing fancy, but something moderate), 2 cars, fine dining, vacations every now and then....I would say I would need at least $200 000 in terms of annual income

I read some study once that said people need the equivalent of $75000/year to be "happy"...i.e. to be able to buy good food, water, a decent house, clothes, support a family, and have some left over for leisure. Too much more or too little less leads to stress, worry, arguments, etc.

I think $120K/year after taxes would be more than enough for myself.
That would be with a family consisting of my wife, ideally two kids and supporting my parents financially.

That's asking for quite a bit.

Considering average household income for people in university is waaaaay above the average household median, the responses are going to be skewed. It all depends on what comfort means to you. For some people, comfort means never driving a car more than 3 years old... others can live comfortably off of very little. It also depends on when you retire.

And I agree with Fight. right now, as a student, i don't really have an idea of how much it takes to live a comfortable lifestyle, but, if I were to think of a number I would go with 50-60k. That is without kids and single. that is also only my income. If i were to get married, than together I think having around 100k, wouldn't be too hard, and we could live quite well.

so... are the numbers you mentioned just your own earnings or the combined with your spouse.

Unless your commute is longer than an hour and you have extenating circumstances such as medical problems or parents you want to take care of, I don't know why anybody would need any more than 100k combined income.. 80k if single. If you do, you don't know how to manage finances..

Having travelling aspirations or more than 1 kid is a different story, though.

Kudos, nadinee, Tailsnake like this.

I'm not aware of many routes that guarantee salaries near 200k.

adaptation, Kudos like this.
