Music 1AA3

Taken from the course syllabus:

In this course we will examine the history of Western Art Music from the beginning of the Classical Period (ca. 1750) to the present day. The material will be presented through lectures, weekly readings from the assigned textbook and weekly listenings from the assigned CD set. All testing (except the final exam) will take place during class time.

Course Evaluation:
3 In-class tests (each worth 20%)
1 cumulative final exam (40%)

-----

The thing I really liked about this course was that there were no assignments and no tutorials. The tests were actually pretty easy. You'd have a listening portion (he plays a sample of each piece 3 times, and you have to identify the work, composer, and answer a little question about it), fill in the blank (basically definitions), matching, true or false and short answer sections. The tests were no more than 2 pages, back and front. Yep, pretty easy right? I'd say 99% of the time I would study the night before the test and manage to get above a 75 haha, so that should give you an idea.

The material is somewhat interesting, I'd say. I really enjoyed the tracks the prof played during class -- definitely a nice break from hearing him lecture the entire hour. Sanden, the prof for this class, pretty much got all of his lecture material from the textbook. Just a heads up, treat that textbook as your bible come exam time! This was probably why I didn't bother going to class as much... haha, oops! Anyway, easy mark if you put a lot of effort into it, decent mark if you don't. Overall, I'd recommend it.

hans23, kmer all say thanks to shleyaa for this post.

Yeah, i agree with winonakid on that part. He was a bit on the boring side, unfortunately, but I would've rather listened to him than read the text book (which is basically where he got all his lecture material from).

Yes, totally agree with how boring the prof was. I'm not gonna lie, I found myself falling asleep most of his lectures. When I took MUSIC 1A03, I had Dr. Mitchell, and I found him a whole lot better than Dr. Sanders (I think that's his name...)

However, I absolutely fell in love with the music we listened during class. Especially near the end of the year, with the 21st c. music and I guess, all the more abstract and strange music . Still love classical tho It's an interesting course. I personally found it more interesting reading the txtbook myself, than listening to the prof. Overall pretty easy course - easy, quick tests, and the exam was fair. Need to memorize those CD Listings tho!

"No previous knowledge of music required."

There are no prerequisites for Music 1AA3.

But I wouldn't know if it taking Music 1A03 would make it easier. I would assume so though.

I think taking Music 1A03 would probably help in giving you an idea of what to expect on the tests and exam, especially the first one...I didn't take it though, and I was fine

Hmm.. well I'm not sure who's teaching it this year, but I had Paul Sanden as my professor. His email is sandenp [at] mcmaster.ca ... you could try emailing him, but I have no idea how much help you would get doing that :\ But good luck!!
