I'm taking this one next semester. I took 1A03 last year and had Ostashewsi (I think that's the spelling) as the prof. The tests were very easy, as the textbook's website had all of the questions used on the tests. The prof just took questions from the website, and a quick-run through the night before made the test an easy 80+. The textbook was pretty much required, as there were no lecture notes posted and I found the material more interesting the more in-depth I got, which the textbook provided. Also, the textbook came with the CDs that had the music we listened to in-class and were tested on. The only bad part was the group project, which was kind of lame from what I can remember.
Also, the exam was a joke. The night before, I had forgotten I had the exam the next day and hadn't studied at all. After four or five hours of studying, I aced it.
Obviously this year will be different, and I think I'll be more interested in the music. The chants and Renaissance music aren't as exciting to me as much as the Classical and Romantic periods, though I liked the Baroque a lot.
Also, you don't have to know music at all. There's no prerequisites or anything. Obviously if you have a basic knowledge of the composers and their works it will help a lot, but if you don't, you'll be fine.
