MUSS E-mail System
Am I the only person who thinks that our McMaster e-mail system is not user-friendly and a tad bit outdated? A friend from York recently showed me their e-mail system and I have to say, there is simply no comparison to MUSS. I even remember (as recently as last year) when we had to flag e-mails and then delete them before they actually made it easier to delete this year (hopefully the upper years know what I'm talking about).

I've been forwarding my e-mail in an effort to avoid having to use the system but I'm sure nobody else likes having their personal e-mail flooded with school-related messages.

Maybe there's a new system coming to replace what we have now, but I'm really interested to know if there's any plan to update anything, even just the layout.

Thoughts?

Ya, I agree. The interface is pretty ugly and needs updating badly. Also, I thought we still had to flag an email before we could delete it. But this is my last year and I don't really care anymore.

I hate the MUSS system. I hate it even more because IT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY FOR ME!! There have been countless times (using muss, msu, hotmail and gmail accounts) when people have emailed me using that address AND I DON'T GET ANYTHING.

And apparently according to UTS there is nothing wrong with my email.

UGH!!

They are supposedly redoing the interface. I remember filling out a survey about what i liked (nothing) and what i hated (pretty much everything). It is probably a senior project for computer science / computer engineering students. We will probably never see the end product, especially because I am graduating. They are slow with redoing things. It took an extra year for Maccess to come out, and they were talking about a WebCT/learnlink hybrid 2 years ago but that is probably dead now.

Aghh, I find that MUGSI is generally crappy, including the e-mail. OSCAR is also really hard to navigate. McMaster needs to update its systems really badly.

I also hate how you have to log in to get to every section of MUGSI over and over again. This is probably some kind of security measure but it's so annoying.

The MUSS email system has POP3 support, so you can have your emails sent directly to your preferred email client, such as Windows Mail or Microsoft Outlook.

This lets you avoid using the regular interface.

Yes you can link it but it doesn't always send the e-mails to the linked e-mail address. I've had a few times, especially recently, when people would ask me if I started the new assignment in a class and I was completely confused because I hadn't gotten it yet. And even when I checked MUSS e-mail account the e-mail wasn't in there either.

I have to agree. MUSS seems to have a nasty habit of silently dropping emails from time to time.

Although the general suckiness of the MUSS system is evident(functionally) , I do have to point out that it loads very quickly and I can do for example /inbox in firefox to quickly navigate it. SO, I hope the next email interface will also be text, for the sake of usefulness as opposed to eye candy.

you might not be getting your email because there is a built in spam filter... just log in and under "rules" you just delete the "SPAMRule" and you get all the email.. and then you can use your very own spam filter and make sure theres nothing thrown away that shouldnt be..

I don't really understand why MUSS would think an e-mail from a professor was spam but okay I'll try it

The school should switch to GMail. It's a proper web-based system, with proper security, has good spam filters, has a super clean UI, super easy administrator access and so forth.

For the record I don't mean we all get [email protected] accounts. The University can actually enter into a contract with Google and use the web-based GMail software used on a corporate level.

There are Universities in the States doing this and saving like 60% of costs. Here's a story about Australian Universities switching: http://www.misaustralia.com/viewer.a.../1214270475399

What it means:
-MUCH more space. AkA no longer will accounts run out of space.
-WAY nicer interface
-Lack of need to forward the MUSS Emails like so many people do
-A LOT CHEAPER!!

another option that is also being adopted by a ton of schools is called Zimbra, which is a bit more expensive but has a lot of options that is good: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/09...gmail-outlook/
