Mysterious deaf person at Thode
Has anyone encountered this mysterious looking deaf man at Thode?

Think I'm crazy? Read on...

I was studying a week ago at Thode on the second floor (at the far study carrels). I was on my laptop and listening to music. All of a sudden, I have someone tapping on my shoulder quite a few times. At first, I didn't notice it because I was listening to music, but after a few taps, I noticed it. I looked back, and I see a middle aged man smiling at me. It was pretty scary. Anyways, he put a card in front of my face (literally). The card reads:

"Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

[Santa Clause image]

Ladies & Gentlemen:
I am a deaf person selling
these cards for a living.

PAY ANY PRICE.

THANK YOU FOR
YOUR KINDNESS"

At the back of the card it has words translated into sign language.

Anyways, at first I didn't realize that he was deaf, so I continuously asked him what he needed. He just kept smiling. I then read the card, and found out he was deaf. So I decided to give him a Tonnie. I was in the Christmas spirit I guess...

But that's not all...

When I was leaving Thode to go to class, I encountered him again, and he started smiling at me. This time, it looked like he was trying to hold his laugh. It looked very suspicious...

So, has anyone encountered this dude? Did I get scammed?

...and no I'm not going crazy, and this wasn't a dream.

==================
What he looked like:
- Male
- Caucasian
- Middle aged
- Black hair & black beard
- Not well dressed
==================

I was going post this here the day this happened to me, but it totally slipped my mind. I just found the card he gave me, so I thought I'd post it now.

To be honest, you were probably scammed. I haven't encountered him myself, but if I did I would probably ask a librarian to call security. I'm sure he's not allowed to do that.

It would be pretty callous if he was actually deaf, but I really doubt he was.

If you were looking for absolute proof though, yelling while he has his back turned is an easy enough test

There are tonnes of these guys going around doing this all over the place. I don't ever give them money, a lot of them ARE scammers. One time at a Tim Horton's a dude did this to me, but I said no and looks like he got pissed. Later I see him driving away in a classic firebird. Seriously wtf.

I've never seen this guy but I remember a while back when I was at home I met someone doing the exact same thing. I was in a fast food restaurant and he gave me the card and I hadn't heard anything about it before so I gave him some change that I had and then like 5 minutes later one of the employees was yelling at him telling him that he had already been warned that he couldn't do that there.
So I am almost sure that he was indeed a scammer.

Wonder how much he can actually make from that.

Oh well. It's only $2.00 you lost.

This guy hasn't been caught yet?

Isn't this a security issue? We can't have people like that coming into our libraries or anywhere else on campus. What if he was armed with a weapon?

I think you should let Security know about this guy...

I agree, but security is pretty lax around campus. I've never been asked to produce my student id. In fact, today in my exam the proctor didn't even flip my student id card over to see my photo.

All of these people are scammers making a quick buck.

Best thing to do is to talk back in basic sign language and see if they pick it up.
