I would actually suggest volunteering for the SpeakEasy program.
We assist all undergraduate and graduate students of all cultural/ethnic backgrounds in getting accustomed to the English language and Canadian culture. We pair up native-speaking English students with the students who need to learn English.
How it works is the paired students meet up for an hour a week, at any place of their choosing (coffee shop, MUSC--anywhere really) for just informal discussion. If you are looking for a Japanese, Chinese, Spanish etc friend to improve both your languages, then definitely check out the SpeakEasy program. (plus it is resume material).

-And yes I know it reads as a plug for the program, but if you are looking for new friends and getting experience with different cultures and languages definitely check this program out.
