Number of people allowed in a course
Hi,
I have heard that a course for a certain level will have more spaces reserved for people with in that level (ex. most seats in a level I course for level I students).

Lets say I wanted to take a 1st year course (I'm going into my 3rd year) and it's full right now. When level I students are allowed onto solar, will I also have a chance to get a seat in the course, or will the course only have more seats for level I students?

Hopefully thats not too confusing..
Thanks to anyone who can give me some info on this.

By that time I don't think you will be able to get onto SOLAR anymore. It closes 6-7 days after it opens.

My theory is that SOLAR does not allow anyone to register into level 1 courses (except those in level 1 AND in the faculty the course belongs to) until after SOLAR opens again in August.

They should really have an "UNAVAILABLE" status rather than just "FULL". It trolls students into making them think they've missed their chance.

Thats true.
I wanted to know if that would be a good strategy to get into a course
It would work with a 2nd year course (for me). But I don't want to spend all that time getting onto solar again if it won't make a difference.

Sort of, it closes seven days after you first open it, so if you open it late then there's still a shot.

1. Students who are required to take a course are guaranteed a spot, no matter what. Using Commerce 2AA3 as an example, this means all level II Commerce students will get in, as well as level II Engineering and Management students.

2. I'm guessing that all students required to take it for their degree are also guaranteed a spot, regardless of level. This means level III, IV, or V Commies and Eng Management get a seat if they choose to take it.

3. I know for certain (according to the registrar) that only 40 spots are open to people who want to take it for the purposes of a minor. I assume this extends to anyone who'd want to take it as an elective. Of these 40 spots, priority begins with level IV students then works its way down.

4. When this is all done and over with, the academic advisor will look at enrolment/capacity and see if anyone on the wait list will fit in as a result of people unexpectedly not taking it.

With that being said, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get into a first-year course unless it's a popular elective that some degrees require, like the first-year Econs or something.

Yes, but only a limited amount of seats are opened for students that do not require the course. The rest is reserved for students that need to take the course.
