Nursing 1F04

This course served as a short introduction to health, the nursing profession/process, basic nursing theory, and clinical skills. The course was taught in self-directed PBL style. Each class consisted of about 8-10 people. This course was split up into two blocks (Clincal or PBL) on either Mondays or Fridays. Clinical was usually four hours long and PBL was two and a half. In clinical classes, you learned basic nursing skills such as therapeutic communication, vital signs, hand aesepsis, documentation, and the general survey. Most of these skills were tested at the end of term in the form of a objective clinical skills examination (OSCE) worth 35%. PBL focused alot on the nursing process and research. Two client scenarios were given throughout the term, and students were expected to work together to research and provide practical solutions for each client. Two essays were written throughout the term (20%+30%) as well as one oral presentation (15%). Every class did things their own way, but in my class, a different student or a pair of students would facilitate the discussion each week. Overall, it was a very good introduction to self-directed learning and nursing in general.

Also keep in mind that you don't have professors, but tutors in this course. They're basically there to "guide" you in your journey of self-directed learning. The way the material is taught varies from group to group, but you all ultimately end up learning the same concepts. N1F04/N1G04 are basically the same thing. In N1F04 you're introduced to the most basic nursing concepts that Davey mentioned and health care PBL problems. N1G04 (second term) you get more into system assessments and health care problems. This class is also a great way to meet people and make really good friends because of the small class sizes and constant group work involved.
