orgo molecule kits
hey foe those who have taken orgo - chem 20a3/20b3 - i know the molecule model kits are highly recommended, so i was just wondering which ones you found to be useful. there are 2 types at titles, ones which fit together like kenix and the atoms are just the ends of the pieces, and the other type which has the atoms as balls and connection rods sep.

also i remember last year in exams i think i saw the orgo exams/tests they had the molecule kit with them as aid. was i just seeing things or are they actually used in tests/exams, if so which set was used?

i had the molecular visions set.. i guess that would be the kenix looking one.

yes they are used during testing... very useful in 2oa3.. not so much in 2ob

I only used the molecular kit (i had the molecular visions set) for 2OA3 it was not useful for 2OB3, I actually I forgot my set for the 2OB3 exam and borrowed some pieces from a friend. We both ended up not using the pieces.

I use mine as room decor now, that shit is hot!

yep. def get the molecular visions set (seems to be the norm).

to expand, it was useful in 2OA3 because there was a lot of info on cyclohexane chair conformations, chair flips, and it helped to see the enantiomers etc. as well as an emphasis on diasteromers/meso/enantiomeric compounds which may not always be obvious (so you build the molecule with the kit to check which one it is).

for 2OB3, the only thing it might be slightly useful for is sugars, but only for bond angles of cyclohexanes if you havent memorized them by then (and a lot of times it's just given to you anyways and you just need to label an H or OH).

I think there are two molecular visions one, the white collapsed box and the green box. The white one is $14 and the green one is $33. Which would you guys recommend?

I got the green one =/

What're the differences between the two. I figured the green one was better since it's more expensive and it's "flexible"

you are not allowed to bring the box to the exam by the way, so you will have to dump everything in a plastic see thru bag, so you are paying more for a neat box that you will not be able to use in exams, green box has more pieces but you wont be needing them. I don't know its up to you. I got the white one because it does the job.

Right now in the book store there are 3 different kits.

One is in a plastic bag and costs $14.00. I believe this is the molecular visions one.

There is also a "Flexible Stereochemistry Molecular Model Kit" that comes in a green plastic box and costs ~$24.00.

The third is the "Molymod Molecular Model Set", comes in a grey plastic box and costs $33.00.

I used molymods because honestly I couldn't image visualizing things with the other one.

That said by the end of 2OA3 I wasn't really using them anymore.

What're the differences between the Molecular Visions ones and the Molymod one?
