The only chance of recovering the document is unfortunately probably now lost because the computer overwrites and deletes files in the temp folder quite often. In the future, if preview crashes, you could try checking your temporary folder:

To access it from Finder, use Command-G (Shift-Command-G in Mavericks) and enter /tmp in the dialogue box.

Also, be careful when editing PDF files. The standards are not very clear and editing PDFs in an editor other than Adobe Acrobat Pro can cause problems. That's not to say that everyone must get that insanely expensive program just to do what they need to do, I'm just saying to save often. In fact, it probably crashed
while you were saving.
