physics capa question
Could someone help walk me through how to solve this?

Henry gets into an elevator on the 50th floor of a building and it begins moving at t=0.00 s. His apparent weight is shown over the next 6.0s. What is Henry's mass if his maximum apparent weight within the elevator is 400.0N?

(so on the graph, the first 1sec his apparent weight is 200N, from 2-5sec his weight is 300N and from 5-6 his weight is 400N.)

How far has Henry traveled after 6.0s?

So i found the mass to be 30.6kg (which was right) from using when his weight was 300N, the elevator was not accelerating then so I just used F=ma. Then I found the accelerations during the 1st and 5th sec. Then I tried calculating the total displacement by using d=vt+1/2at^2 for all 3 time periods and I dont get the right answer.

Is there something wrong with my method? Because Ive been recalculating and recalculating and the numbers seem to be right... :(

If someone could please help, Id be ever so grateful!!

Dude, for academic help go to the basement of Thode Library, there are rooms with TA's there that help first years answer questions like that.

There should also be discussion boards for your class on Avenue.

that is odd.

Either way, this is not a great place for this since you are trusting a bunch of strangers that may not have not done this kind of physics for a while to answer the deceptive questions of capa.

try googling the question without numbers and 1/3 of the answers are online, or the steps to find your answer are

If there's no discussion board for that course then go to the physics help center/tutoring in the basement of thode.
For physics, before you start looking for a solution online, try your best and don't give up! If you tried really hard solving a question and still can't figure out how to solve it, then you can get some help.

I tried googling part of the question online and found this:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...24 608AAkygKq
It looks very similar to your question...so yea before clicking on the link, give that question your best!

Hint: When Henry's apparent weight is 200N, which direction is the elevator moving? (up or down?) What is the acceleration? Hence, what is the distance he travels during this interval? How about when his weight is 300N? 400N? Draw freebody diagrams if you're unsure.

Remember that the question asks you for _displacement_ and not simply distance, so you need to take direction into account. (How?)
