Profs Outsourcing Marking to India
http://www.thestar.com/news/world/in...-india#article
I'm interested in hearing what you guys think!
I'm a little torn on this. I guess part of me figures profs are already outsourcing marking to TAs, and I've gotten some TAs who are awful at giving feedback, guidance, or help, so it wouldn't make a difference if they were at Mac and had office hours or were located in India. But, at the same time, if I had a problem with the mark, it would be easier to go to the TA and talk about their reasoning than it would to talk to a person located in India, or in some cases, getting in to see a prof after something that was graded is handed back.
So what do you think?

Well can't knock the hustle! They doing it for cheap. Either TAs need to work on lower wages or Universities need to quit being business companies and provide only education and lower the tuition fees so that TAs won't ask for more money. The fees are going up this year again soo...

Not a bad idea. But essays or written papers are sometimes subjectively marked and I would guess it would be marked pretty hard cuz its INDIA!!! Everything there is needs to be of a high standard in terms of academics.

I'd rather keep the money in Canada.
Most science/engineering grad students are guaranteed a $20K stipend for their research and a portion of that comes from TA'ing. Might as well get them to mark stuff if we're paying them already.

Let's outsource scanning of our Scantron sheets.
Then maybe...just maybe...some people wouldn't have to wait 6 weeks for marks.

I see he's helping his friends in India, how nice of him. I think this is disgusting, totally disgusting. Equally disgusting are those who use such service.

It's probably the worst idea I've ever heard, and if I found out my professor was using this, I would likely drop the course.

Oh wow, they already cut our cell bio labs, and the TA's from like 18 to 8 and now this.....thats redic...or who knows maybe the TA's in India won't give me 50 percent on my lab report in results for not having graphs when they were in the appendix...but I'm just rambling....
I feel like this school is cutting funding in all the wrong places...

Not sure if I missed it, but how exactly do they get the assignments overseas? I understand electronic assignments, but how about all those paper assignments? I can't imagine that they would scan so many pages and they definitively wouldn't ship them off.

Where'd you get that from?
Just because someone with a 'foreign' name is outsourcing to India means he / she is doing so in order to fulfill some nationalist dream, eh?

On the other hand, I would rather have qualified people mark my work, than grad students who are not specialized in that area of interest (which I know to have occured in various classes)
