This world is disgusting, why is marks a measure of one's abilities and such? I have great marks don't get me wrong and I am definitely not jealous for that matter. But I really don't understand why McMaster honors these students? The issue of comparing student marks and recognizing people who have an average of 12 is revolting.
Yes recognizing people with an average above 9.5 to be in the dean's list is nice, but the thing with the 12 average is just disgusting.
These people could be nice and awesome, or could the rudest meanest son of a bit*h you have ever interacted with. I don't think you should respect them just because there average is high. So if Hitler had a sessional average of 12 you would respect him? You can argue and say, "Oh that's not what I meant" but having respect for people who get an average of 12 is very UNRESPECTING to others who did not achieve this average and could be clearly way better people. I actually respect people who go to school and try to develop a career and have to work to pay their school fees and what not. Or Someone with a disability yet achieves academically. These are actually people to be respected.
I am not saying a 12 average is not an achievement, its an academic excellency, but you can't respect that person merely because they achieved a 12 point average. That is revolting.
This is just my honest opinion and I was just offended by the word "respect" I am not trying to you know, offend you or pick on you. If you have respect for them good for you.

I really wasn't expecting anyone to analyze my post this thoroughly. I didn't mean to imply that that I don't have respect for people who are trying to develop a career, and overcome obstacles (like disability, as you mentioned); believe me, I do. I don't know where, in my <20 word post, you would've inferred that. Respect isn't something I give out lightly. I don't respect people on the Provost's Honour Roll because 12 is a pretty number. I respect them because as far as I've always understood, marks are generally a representation of the amount of work you put in(although I understand that's debatable... ), and somewhere along the line, these students not only worked hard, but also went above and beyond. There's no denying that. So I suppose I should rephrase. I respect hard work. I myself am a damn hard worker, so when I see evidence of other people's hard work, I appreciate it. It inspires and motivates me to work even harder, and helps me to see areas of personal improvement. A bit of [un]healthy competition never hurt anyone
To clarify, I respect the achievement, as well as the people who get on the Provost's Honour Roll. Hard work (assuming that there is a correlation between it, and grades) is just a personal quality that I admire, like kindness and stuff. I really don't need to explain myself here... I'll respect whomever I want, for whatever reasons I want.
I really do appreciate the response though. It was a good chance to reflect on some personal things (I seriously sat here thinking/practically typing up an essay before I erased it all and kept the first paragraph. haha)

Someone has been watching Pirates of the Caribbean and using it to expand their vocab. Apart from the bickering twats thing. I don't recall Johnny Depp calling anyone that.

Was that an attempted call-out, Gordo?
Almost everyone on the planet, even the destitute, have seen POTC
Trust me, my vocabulary is just fine, regardless of sarcastic movie references.

Does that make sense?? and no its not disgusting because I can't get it, its disgusting because it creates a lot of problems as I have stated above. And she said respect, respect is respect. I don't respect that achievement .. how can someone respect an achievement. Ohh I respect my cup of milk because it gives me calcium. You can't respect an inanimate thing, you respect the person.

wtf! you have worst analogies ever...how the hell is cup of milk related to getting a 12? I think it's a pretty big deal that you can get a 12 in all of your courses. Not that I am one of them, but it's a pretty big achievement. I think what she meant was that she has great respect for getting an avg of 12, not for avg of 12! lol

Well what can I say? I suppose I'm fairly naiive - I believe hard work and intelligence can allow you to reach where you want to go, not your faculty/program decided years before you even decide to apply.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong? Who knows.
Besides, I only feel like doing medicine because it's one of the hardest things to get accepted to - that's all. If you're good enough to get almost get into medicine, you're good enough to do almost anything else you want.

The cutoff for the Senate Scholarship was 10.6 for Life Science? My first year average was 10.6, but I did not receive the scholarship! What gives?
