To be honest I don't think it always matters.
I.e. look at how the people in the Riddles thread are competing to get their answers in on time.
Software does play a big role in it but so does luck.
If you have Firefox but 25 tabs open, you may not have much of an advantage.
Best thing to do is restart 15 minutes before you plan to log into MUGSI and close all superflous applications (ie. Windows Sidebar) and just have the document and browser window you need open so you're functioning at your optimal level with respect to your computer's speed and performance.

I don't think it really matters though, MUGSI and SOLAR are so slow. It's basically like I was on Dial-Up. I should have checked how long it took to load a page (I use fasterfox, which has a timer) but I didn't. I would guesstimate that it took close to a minute to load a page though.

Don't say you use IE (which I don't anymore) on this forum... You'll get owned instantly, I experienced it personally.

You get assigned one and then when timetables come out if there is space you can switch to a different core/tutorial I think.

This is correct. On August 11th, you will be able to see the timetable that SOLAR created for you. On August 13th, SOLAR will re-open, and you will be able to swap around Cores/Tutorials/Labs etc. if you wish to do so.

Time for my dumb noobie question of the day: What is a core?
