Racism at Mac
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to hear your stories or opinions about racism in Mac. I myself have heard a lot of racist remarks here at Mac. In high school I went to a predominantly white school and never heard a single racist remark.
So how come here at Mac, which is diverse as it can be, I hear a lot of racist remarks?
Any thoughts?
One example of my experience was during an anthropology class in which we were watching the SARS thing and this guy seated at the row behind me said that he hates Chinese people and the blond female friend of him agreed and said that she also hates Chinese people.
Is it a jealousy thing? I mean, in all honesty, a lot of non-whites are smart.

It exists everywhere that ignorance and fear exist. And dare I say, stupidity?

Maybe they were just kidding around, and you thought they were being serious?
I find in a diverse population, I hear many racist jokes, even if they're telling it to a person they're "insulting".
For example, you can call Russell Peters racist for his jokes, but even the people that he insults laugh at his jokes.
I find very few people are actually racist.

Sorry but, your last sentence killed your post. I can no longer take it seriously.

Nope they weren't kidding and I am sure about that. I know what you mean by just kidding around, but in this case, it was serious. I do agree that the racist people at mac are few but then when I compare it to my predominantly white high school in which I never heard a single racist comment, makes me think that their are more people at mac who probably think the same as does racist people.

I definitely think it's ignorance.
I have family members that are racist towards certain groups, but they've never actually really met/talked to/gotten to know someone of that race/culture!!
(Or they're taking from a very small sample size - just because one person is a dick, doesnt mean they all are)

I totally agree with you. I feel so bad for people especially the one's from mac since it is a very diverse university.

You also have to take into account that McMaster's community members haven't been here since they were kids. They come from a wide variety of places.

Have you actually *never* met any brunette girl that was a total idiot?
You should meet some women!

Sometimes too much diversity isn't good. Maybe at your predominatly white school there were 5 people who weren't white, so white students never noticed them. Maybe that guy in your class doesn't like it because diversity is affecting his Canadian culture. We'll never know, but racism exists everywhere. Its a sad fact
