If you're looking for recommendations, all I'm willing to do is provide you with artists that will be new to you. Well, most of them should be new to you:
De La Soul - "3 Feet High and Rising" and "De La Soul is Dead"
These are much older De La albums, but they're probably some of the better ones. It's basically fun late '80s, early '90s Hip Hop stuff. You might even recognize some of the songs, a few were fairly large singles back in the day.
Recommended song to test-listen: "Me, Myself and I"
CunninLynguisits - "A Piece of Strange," "Southern Underground," and "Will Rap For Food"
Most "underground" Hip Hop kids revere the 'Lynguists as some of the best Southern stuff. When I mention that they're Southerners, though, forget all of that Southern rap you've seen on TV and heard on the radio, as CunninLynguists don't sound like any of it -- their stuff is much, much better. "Will Rap for Food" and "Southern Underground" are two albums I wholeheardedly urge you to check out, since they contain some of the most fun Hip Hop tracks I've ever heard. "A Piece of Strange" is more of a stylistically mature Hip Hop album, but if you're into really intelligent Hip Hop, go for it.
Recommended track(s) to test-listen: "So Live!," "Hellfire," and "Old School"
Jurassic 5 - "Power in Numbers" and "Jurassic LP"
More fun, easy-listening -- even dancable -- Hip Hop jams. These guys have had mild successes in the mainstream, but I still consider them to be "underground." The lyrics are enjoyable, since they're reminiscent of oldschool Hip Hop, and these guys even set up some mean harmonies. Jurassic 5 is all about the positive Hip Hop vibe, so if you're having a good day, and are looking to make it better with some great music, it's worth your time to go Jurassic.
Recommended tracks(s) to test-listen: "What's Golden" and "Concrete Schoolyard"
Now, you might not like some of that stuff, but I've got lots more Hip Hop recommendations past those that are sure to satisfy. Just ask if you need more!
