well enjoy checking your privilege in the next few months lol.
I'd say live the songs, and come back just as strong. most ppl dont like engineers anyway, so you don't have anything to lose.

Good riddance.

Although I am curious about what "unsanctioned activities" are...

Please read my post from earlier. We are doing our best to stay on topic without starting an unneeded flame war.

This is the last time I'll interject and anything else indulging that post will be regarded as flame-bait.

As much as I love chirping Red Suits, and I find them annoying as fuck at times... this suspension is ridiculous.

The songbook is barely known of outside the engineering faculty, and I'm pretty sure none of the more lewd ones are actually chanted on campus.

Red Suits help new engineers make friends and feel comfortable in a place where they're often made fun of (I do so myself for no good reason ).

I hope they change the punishment and allow them to participate in Welcome Week 2014. Not the same without them.

I wasn't in engineering, and yet as a first year during frosh week I remember a friend showing me the songbook and assuring me that yes, many of them were chanted often. So I disagree that it is barely known outside of the faculty and that only appropriate songs are chanted on campus.

Having said that, I can't imagine WW without the redsuits either...that's HUGE, that they're not allowed to participate, and I think it will ultimately do more harm to the incoming first-years than good. The redsuits really do help to create a sense of community.

Why should a community culture that has evolved over decades suddenly be forced to reform completely just because it's suddenly getting some new members? If women were for equality, then shouldn't they show that they can appreciate the jokes and can dish out their own instead of trying to sensor what the men before them have created?
Why try so hard to remove any shred of personality that the faculty has? I'm a second year engineer and outside of frosh week I haven't heard any of the chants, why make the small sense of community that exists even more irrelevant?

It's not just women who chose the university's course of action here? In fact, in the dailynews article only quoted male academics???

The problem is that some of those chants really are offensive, to the point that during my own welcome week in 2010 we hadn't heard them because the redsuits leading us didnt encourage saying them. We had two or three really vulgar ones on the bus to faculty night (?) but they were very sexual but it wasn't violent sexual assault, which is the issue. No sense of engineering "community" or "personality" should potentially harm members of its own group or the university's community.

I don't think the matter is being dealt with in the right way though... The song book was written a few years ago, and many of the songs aren't even repeated on campus. And shutting down the redsuits from welcome week, when they really do create a great sense of community for incoming students, is going to negatively impact the froshies next year. It just seems really extreme of a solution for such a small issue as an offensive song book. I mean... they've said most of these chants in front of faculty before and it's only now that they're getting in trouble for it.....

That's a disgusting, ignorant comment.

First, it's not women who suspended the redsuits. You don't even know if it was a woman's complaint that led to this. There's nothing to indicate that is the case. You're also acting like only women could possibly be offended by those lyrics.

Second, you're acting like women are lucky and privileged to be able to "join" the "community" of engineers and have no business wanting their education to take place in a civil environment, and that "equality" means that they must come up with equally insulting chants in order to be taken seriously or accepted.

Third, if those crude songs comprise all of the personality and community spirit that the faculty has, then I'd argue that they really DO need to have all shreds of personality removed. If that were the case, all it's doing is creating a toxic environment. The reality is that those songs are not a huge element of engineering...its not insignificant, but there are definitely other things that redsuits do - building community and school spirit and whatnot - that are excellent, and key parts of their "personality". Redsuits are the most recognizable student group on campus - they're certainly not lacking in personality.

Just pointing it out there. Like 40-50% of the redsuits are female...
