Does anyone know whether it's possible to get a research position during the year? Most people I know have been getting them during the summer, so I was wondering whether a school-year position is possible...

I wouldn't mind either! I was thinking of maybe volunteering during the year and getting a paid position for the summer.

There are some offered during the year through Work-Study. These are a bit harder to get, because they are usually offered from the summer and continue into the school year, so they only become available if the student quits at the end of the summer.
Profs definately have research openings during the year too, you just have to find the right prof.

Very unlikely during the school year, but still possible. Shouldn't be too hard to get an unpaid position at any time of the year, though, if you're diligent enough.

I emailed them in around May for a summer position, but they were all full. So they agreed to let me to work with them during the year. The sooner the better, IMO...because it's sometimes on a first come, first serve basis.
