Retaking a course in second sem.
I got a 4 in a course first semester... if i retake it second semester, will this cause major problems for my gpa? or will it just average out all the marks? (including the 4)... another question, i was wondering what i need to do if i have a conflict and theres nothing else i can switch into because courses are full... the conflict is with a physics (1L03) tutorial... and a math (1LS3) core... i would think it wouldnt matter about the tutorial, and i can just go to the core.

Marks are average out, so let's say you get a 12. It'll be (12+4)/2 = 8 is the maximum grade you can get for the course by retaking it. If it's a physics tutorial, then usually the professor tells you in the first week or so, that you can drop by the instructional assistant and whatnot and they can place you in a different section. That's what happened with Chem. So I'm assuming it's the same. Also, a lot of people might start switching or dropping the course from nowinto the first week of school m so you might be able to get in that way since tutorials don't usually start until the second week or so.

Why do you plan on retaking it? I knew somebody that had to retake a course because their degree specifically reguired a certain mark in a certain class, but if that's not the case, it's a huge waste of money and time.

Major problems? Only if you do shitty in the course again. If you get a 12 in it, your average for those 2 courses will be an 8. Is it worth the 500-700 dollars? Probably not (again, if a certain mark is required, different story)

Unless the class/mark is a prereq for something else, doing badly in a class rarely has consequences, asides from a lower gpa. Retaking it won't accomplish anything.

@The conflict problem: you can either e-mail the prof/department/counselors/whoever and explain that you have a conflict and would need to be placed in another tutorial for physics. Or you can just go to a different math core (you don't even need to change it on your schedule). People do this all the time.

If another physics tutorial can fit into your schedule, I'd email the department and just ask to be switched into it. Explain the situation, and it normally isn't an issue.
