Second year question
I'm going into second year honours life sci +i have a question
I wanted to take BIO 2C03 (genetics) but this is at a conflicting time with another course that i wanted to take but I saw on the master timetable that MOL BIO 2C03 is available at a time that I could take
I tried looking but I couldn't even find this course anywhere to look up its prerequisites.. I'm assuming that this is the genetics course strictly for the people enrolled in the molecular bio program ?
Does anyone know if I could take this one ?

Unfortunately, I don't think you are allowed to register in MOL BIO 2C03 b/c it is strictly for those in Mol bio and genetics program (http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...13/pg1983.html --> It states you have to be in Mol bio to register for MOL BIO 2C03). I don't think there was a seperate genetics course for students in Mol bio when I took it last semester(I remember having some mol bio students in my tutorial).

Biology 2C03 is offered both in term 1 and term 2. Do you have conflicts for both semesters? If you do, you can always take genetics in summer school.

Another alternative would be to take genetics online via distance education at another school. I needed BIO 2C03 as a prereq for professional school but couldn't fit it into my schedule. So I took BIOL 139 at Waterloo (now it is BIOL 239), it's an intro genetics course with no prereqs and Mac accepts it as an equivalent to BIO 2C03. I took it back in Fall 2010 so the course outline may be different now, but it was pretty easy. You watch the lectures at your own pace, there were 5 assignments (due every other week), you participate in online discussion, no midterm, 1 final (during exam period - December/April). And I think it cost $550.

You could take 2C03 in third year. I don't recommend it though. A basic understanding of genetics will make almost all of your biology courses in 3rd year much much more straightforward. Many articles also reference genetics even if they're more biochem than bio, etc. I wish I had taken it in 2nd year. Would have saved myself a lot of trouble later.

I also have a second year question.

For the B.A. Sociology requirements it says "15 units Level II or III Sociology", are these 15 units seperate from the required "SOCIOL 2S06 & SOCIOL 2Z03"? Also, are the 15 units completed in either second year OR third year? Or can I lets say take 12 units second year and then 3 units third year to complete the 15 units?

Thanks!

I'm assuming you're looking here: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...13/pg1747.html

From the looks of it, the 15 units ARE separate from the 2 required courses, and all of the courses listed must be taken by the end of third year. So yeah, I guess if it fits your schedule you could pack 2nd year with sociology courses and do a bunch of electives in 3rd.
