Shoppers Drug Mart to open across from Mac
Directly across from McMaster Hospital on main street where there used to sit a funeral home has since been torn down and construction begun on a new retail space. The details were limited on what exactly was being built, but it has now been confirmed to be a Shoppers Drug Mart and what appears to be a Starbucks, according to diagrams.
Do you think it's a good thing having a Shoppers close to campus?
Affected businesses of the Starbucks would be Williams Coffee pub just next door as well as the second cup down the street. The pharmacy within MUSC will also be affected by Shoppers having less expensive over counter drugs like Tylenol and Advil cold and flu, which the pharmacy at MUSC seems to be more expensive.

Pretty sure that was an apartment building, not a funeral home... And it's definitely a Shoppers + Starbucks.

I think it'd be pretty awesome to have a Shoppers so close by . Hm, I haven't really been keeping up, but is Booster Juice still being built in MUSC?

I hope the Shoppers isn't going to be haunted. :(
I'm looking forward to being able to satiate my Peak Freans cravings after only a short walk though.
And of course, competition is good. Maybe the presence of a Shoppers so close will push prices of similar goods on campus in the right direction?
And about the two other SDMs nearby: it seems like the Westdale one is inadequate sometimes. They've got most of the necessities but in general I always got the feeling that was a lower-tier Shoppers. I've never actually been inside the one at University Plaza but even if it is better, it's not exactly within walking distance and the HSR (or any public transit system, really) isn't exactly known for its reliability.
As for the Starbucks, I can't really comment but I guess it'll be nice to see a different colour of litter on campus. =\ Not looking forward to hearing pseudo-coffee elitists talk about how much better Starbucks is than Tim's though, and then the real-coffee elitists talk about how it's actually not.

It was a funeral home till about 2010 when it got converted to student housing. (I know weird.) Then the building got demolished and a building is now getting constructed that will have zero parking space. Not to mention it is the 2 013 014 411 shopper drug market within a 2mile radius. Cursed property I say....

AGREED^ I remember the funeral home days --> student housing --> now THIS
I wonder how they are dealing with the parking issue for people who want to park and chill in starbucks or shop in shoppers. Is it geared at pleasing bus taking McMaster students?

If you go to McMaster then chances are you either take the bus, live close by, or park at McMaster. All of McMaster shouldn't have any problems with the fact that there will be no parking because at one time or another they will be on campus anyways.
There's a huge shoppers in University Plaza for those who do have a car (McMaster or not). But there's no other Starbucks with lots of parking spaces.
I don't see the problem with no parking spaces if their main target is McMaster students/faculty.

The pharmacy at MUSC has the lowest dispensing rates for prescription medication though
