Show me the $$$
Hi everyone,

So it has recently come to my attention that there have been some obvious cuts in the budget, noticeably to the faculty of Science. For example, Cell biology TA's cut from 18 to 5 (or 8) and hours reduced, labs have been taken out. Uncertainly pertaining to lab courses such as Bio 3K03 and 3F03 (not offered this year)...
I am not in economics or anything so I don’t really understand the budjet reports, but I did see that in the recent one it said "
"Note that when you exclude the faculties of Business and Health Sciences, the deficit will be $18.0 million in 2009/10. " from http://www.mcmaster.ca/bms/pdf/2009-10_Financial_Update_J uly-2009.pdf
I was wondering if anyone could clarify for me the situation with respect to the school's growing population its financial state.

Thanks

Yes, It is true There have been recent budget cuts all across the board at McMaster. It is due to a number of reasons I cannot fully comprehend due to my epic fail in the field of accounting/finance(Economics doesn't have alot to do with any of this, Commerce students on the other hand might be better analysts). Among other things there is a budget predicted deficiet of 30-50$ million for the next fiscal year, then the Governmet CPI index for education/tuition came out and there was only a 0.2% increase which is a major major issue in terms of funding for the administration(In other words it is regressive). Student affairs is facing a number of cuts and I clearly hope places like CSD don't get cut!

I will ask the Vice President Education of the MSU to release a statement of his analysis on this issue on the MSU website that I can copy/paste here. This is a important issue for all students but I haven't seen enough coverage on it from most sources unfortunately!

how can all of this money just be disappearing?
im sure its going somewhere.
there has to be a bunch of massive hidden costs that we arent aware of.
or the school's accounting department just sucks. a lot.
