Yeah, chances are you'll get randomed with some douche who doesn't care about respecting any of these principles.. it may be possible to increase your chances for single room if you speak to the housing people directly. With political correctness and all that nowadays people usually are very accomodating to these sorts of requests; its a lot more of a legitimate reason than some person asking for a single room just because they wanna....

They said in the OP that they're getting a single room next year so they probably already filled out a special accommodation form and may have been approved already for a single room.

i think you have it backwards. how about getting put with a roomate that doesn't let you put up pictures, the room has to be clean at all times, and im assuming you have to be quiet and and turn off music etc 5 times every day when he/she does salah or something. sheesh. my dad said he got put with a 50 year old revered in res. and the man prayed outloud kneeling beside his bed each night....not a good time. a single really is for the benefit of both roomates.

Nick, if you had a roomate...and the first day they'd maybe put up pictures and leave some clothes on the floor and start to listen to music and you'd hafta say "you'll have to take those down...and turn that off now" and he'll say "uhhh nah." and things would go so downhill from there...

so be happy with your single!

nerual, _Luu_ like this.

if its a single in a traditional residence (so basically any res besides bates and keyes), the you'll be fine.
u'll end up knowing everybody on ur floor, plus the one above, and the two floors below, and random people not even in ur building.
if ur in bates/keyes, u'll know ur roommates, and basically at most 10 other people in ur building

My floor was about 1/5 single rooms, but a lot of them came out and visited or to the common room, etc. So it definitely all depends on the effort you put in. If it gets too lonely just go sit out in the common room, and you're definitely bound to run into someone. Also, be sure to do that especially during welcome week, because you'll get to meet people in your building and on your floor with all the activities of frosh.

I really wish I had a single in 1st year. I did not have a good time with my roommate. You won't be lonely unless you want to be. Study in the study room. Hang out in the common rooms. Leave your door unlocked when you don't mind being disturbed. Get involved in extra curricular. You will not be lonely promise and if you are you can always bug me! =D
