They're two yellow, waist-high fence pieces on university property beside the entrance. There were only two, so only enough to block the incoming traffic (if that's what they're for). They may be gone by now, but they don't look like the types of things that are being used for the construction, and they are pretty far from the site. I could be wrong, but they do look exactly like the kinds of barricades seen used for symbolically blocking traffic during those types of demonstrations as we're hoping don't happen.

From the claim above that the union isn't planning strike action (and won't if they wish to uphold their own constitution) I'd say that I might be wrong, but those things just looked so ominous yesterday when I saw them yesterday.

This I find funny:

Quote:
The University tabled its best offer on August 20[1]
Hear-say has it that they actually took things off the table when the results for the strike vote came back.

The Sterling entrance will be closed to vehicular traffic during move in this weekend, perhaps that is what those are for.

I just hope there's a way for both parties (the union and the university) to compromise.
That is called negotiations, which the University walked away from when they tried to force their "final offer" down the union memberships throats.

The University has flip-flopped its position on various outstanding issues several times during the negotiations.

The union has not asked for anything new, just the status quo.

Ah that's it then. Just bad timing.

They say it won't be the same as York because none of the teachers/professors/lecturers are part of this union.

Therefore if there is a strike then ALL classes will resume. The only HORRIBLE AND WORST problem is that if the strike lasts for a really long time then chances are exams will be worth 100% (or close to it) since there won't be any tutorials (and hence no assignments) and no mid-terms because there are no invigilators.

But that's really only if the strike lasts for like 2 months, which I'm not saying isn't possible.

Edit: I also said "close to 100%" because they could still have assignments/quizzes on ELM (If they ever get it to work). But I don't see them having heavy weighted assignments/quizzes because of all the possible academic dishonesty.

oh, sorry I misread(tired - been dealing with hundreds of emails for the MSU club I'm president of). It said the situation there(at York) was more complex. Well I feel a bit better.

Nope, those are also supervised and marked by TAs. Although, the marking isn't really the problem since the teacher could theoretically still do it.

What irritates me is that it's already so far into the year...if you're really going to strike, strike during the opening weeks of the academic year when the material is relatively easy, and the TA payroll isn't fast approaching.

Well that'll defeat the purpose wouldn't it? A Strike is meant to disrupt everyday life and pressure the administration into succumbing to their demands. In the end of September there obviously would be a greater impact!

Or it is all a co-incidence and the only reason they are striking now is because the negotiations were stalled till today?
