I find instrumental songs go best with studying, though I'm considered to have fairly odd musical tastes anyhow
Pretty much anything from this man's album:

I have to agree, i can't focus if my music has lyrics, that's why ambient or trip hop like Massive Attack is the best study technique for me

does any1 else hate these "what music is good for ___" threads when every1 has different tastes? suggestions are great but then comes the constant overadvertising of a specific genre/group

Maybe because specific genres and groups are ideal for specific situations, like studying.

Check out Jonsi and Alex. It's one of the guys from Sigur Ros with a roommate he had or something. It's freaking awesomeeeee as background noise.

Doom, drone, sludge or black metal.
Most specifically in doom: Funeral or stoner. Raw black metal is great.
But really, anything works. In the end it all goes in one ear and out the other.

Mozart's piano trios/quartets/quintet in particular. Any classical-era chamber music, really. Music from outside of the classical period (Baroque, Romantic, etc.) tends to get a little distracting, though - there's exceptions, of course, but still

It's not music, but here's what I sometimes like to listen to while I study...
http://www.youtuberepeat.com /watch/?v=TylvUGJIi_w
I get made fun of so bad for this... but seriously, there are no lyrics or melodies so it's perfectly non-distracting.... just pure, simple background noise. It really helps me to focus. Plus it's kinda cool having a pretend audience cheer you on while you study and master those difficult concepts... lolol
